PETALING JAYA: Terengganu’s Mohd Ajmal Aiman Mat Hasan made up for his 200m hurdles loss by romping to a record-breaking run in the boys’ Under-15 200m final in the National Schools Sports Council (MSSM) athletics championships at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
Ajmal stormed to a personal best of 22.58 to better the previous mark of 22.89 set by Daniel Azwan Amar Nand of Perlis in 2004.
The final day of the meet produced three new records, including the boys’ Under-15 4x400m and girls’ Under-18 4x400m, for a total of 11 over the four-day meet.
Ajmal, who was beaten into second place by Mohd Baihaqi Razlan of Kelantan in the 200m hurdles on Friday, had also set a record in the 110m hurdles on Thursday.
Ajmal was named the overall best male athlete for his two record-breaking runs and two silvers (200m hurdles and 4x100m).
Ajmal, a Form Three student of Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), was not quite satisfied despite this being his best-ever achievement in the meet.
“This is the first time I have broken two records in the meet. But I could have won three gold medals if only I didn’t slow down at the finishing line in the 200m hurdles on Friday,” said Ajmal, a prodigy of former Olympian Ishtiaq Mubarak.
“My target was to win both the 110m hurdles and 200m hurdles but I failed to achieve it.”
But the hurdler, who will compete in the Asean Schools Championships in Singapore in June, was still pleased with his record-breaking run in the 200m final.
